Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the government rather than private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

People have different views about who should take charge of (1) scientific research. From my point of view, both the governing body and (2) profit-making organizations should fund scientific studies together.

I think that the government should be responsible for scientific work associated with (3) social welfare such as health care and education. With regard to the former, since research outcomes, like a new vaccine or a cure for (4) infectious diseases, have direct effects on people’s health, medical studies may gain more (5) credibility if they are conducted by the state. It is also the case for research on education. For example, a vast majority of Vietnamese schools are (6) government funded; therefore, it would be a better idea for the government itself to take the lead in carrying out educational studies. Otherwise, people may be (7) skeptical about the outcomes if (8) profit-oriented businesses whose primary goal is to make money get involved and (9) distort research results for their own benefits.

However, we cannot deny scientific achievements brought by private companies in technology fields over the past decade. Take SpaceX, which is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company, as a typical example. Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk – (10) a world business magnate, the company has been proving its leading role in (11) space tourism with significant attainments of launching the first privately funded liquid-fueled rocket into the orbit in 2008 and sending a private spacecraft to the International Space Station in 2012. This (12) resounding success has backed the argument that the private sector’s ample financial resources mobilized and invested in research is (13) conducive to breakthroughs that eclipse those funded by a restricted budget of the authorities.

In conclusion, I hold the opinion that the government and profitable organizations have their distinct and equal parts to play in improving human life through leading scientific research in different fields. It would be a waste of resources and even a loss to human kind if research (14) initiatives are (15) monopolized by the government.
