Disagree with sb: if a type of food disagrees with you, it makes you feel slightly ill or uncomfortable (gây chột bụng/ khó tiêu)

1. Examples:

  • The dishes were delicious, but they somehow disagreed with me so honestly I had quite a hard time digesting all the food. (Những món ăn đó thì rất ngon, nhưng không hiểu vì sao chúng làm tôi khó tiêu nên thú thật là tôi đã có có một khoảng thời gian tương đối khó khăn để tiêu hoá hết đống đồ ăn đó)

  • From my unfortunate own experience, this kind of food may disagree with you if you have a poor digestion. (Từ kinh nghiệm không may mắn gì của chính bản thân tôi thì loại thức ăn này có thể làm bạn chột bụng nếu hệ tiêu hoá của bạn không tốt)

2. Example with contexts:

Part 1: Foreign food // What kind of new foreign food have you tried recently?

Hmm let me see… when I was surfing Facebook a couple of days ago, I came across an advert (quảng cáo) of a new Indian restaurant in town and decided to give it a try. The dishes were delicious, but they somehow disagreed with me so honestly I had quite a hard time digesting all the food.

Part 2: Describe a kind of food that people eat during a special event

During Lunar New Year holiday, Vietnamese tends to prepare a wide range of traditional dishes to feast (đánh chén/ chiêu đãi) and celebrate this special occasion. Some typical dishes you may have heard about are banh chung, banh tet or gio cha, but I’m now going to talk about a less common and more bizarre (kì lạ) dish which is called thit dong – a kind of jellied meat. It is a Northern signature dish which calls for pork and some types of mushroom and what makes it special is that after it has been cooked, it will be put into the fridge. In my opinion, it’s kinda odd (lạ) to eat a cold savory dish, not to mention its jelly form. From my unfortunate own experience, this kind of food may disagree with you if you have a poor digestion.
